The ON / OFF sWitcH - A muST

This blog is in reference to the above article.

For me, the highlight is his final take - "Work diligently on creating artificial intelligence, but spend a lot of money and time building really good on/off switches for it. We need to be able to shut it down in an emergency."

The article, start to end, reminded me of the movie 'I, Robot'. When I first got introduced to AI, my reaction was - Why are people trying to imitate their own species? The advent of technology took pace for it makes the lives of humans easier. Why not content with that? Why try to imitate our complex neural networks? Personally, l do not support the view of using artificially neural networked robots as housekeepers. For, that just makes us humans lazy, inactive and lethargic. Whereas AI is good when it is put in use in contexts like using artificially networked robots for warfare because, the concept replaces many human lives (soldiers') and helps avoid one extreme face of grief, anxiety, fear and emotions around waiting, among many families. Otherwise, why try to build an artificial entity that is more intelligent than humans?

My other question is, right, a few have decided that AI is the way to go. It is the next revolutionizing thing. Then why fear its consequences? As rightly put in the article, any product outcome of an AI will be human made. Why would it go against us? Or rather, should I be asking, why would we have programmed it to go against us at some point? Will the 3 laws that it will be imbibed with, make it intelligent enough to plan events opposing us? Or, is it that considering we are trying to make something more intelligent than us, will it be able to, at some point, defy the laws it is confined to? Why do I feel that there is a sense of constant fear that artificially intelligent machines might outrun the humans to the extent that there is a possibility that humans might become slaves and probably later, extinct?

With my limited knowledge, my present ideology on this is - Science has no bounds, be it natural or artificial science. We start researching and experimenting, sometimes with clarity on where we are heading at and most of the times without a clear picture, towards the unknown, discovering things on the way. So, there are ample chances that in the process, we might stumble up on a discovery we never imagined to discover. A discovery that we ourselves sometimes wouldn't know how we ended up there. A discovery that will be overwhelming. This is all because, we have a lot unknown to us. There are even many basic day to day activities that we are yet to figure out the Whys and Hows like for example, the working of our human brain, our behaviours to different circumstances. As we evolve, research and knowledge also evolves, and there always remains an unknown future, an unknown outcome. Though we do not have control over natural evolution, I would like to assume that we have complete control over human made elements. And to defend our first instincts on danger - safeguard ourselves - it is important that create remote controlled 'Off' button, to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of our own creations that are 'On'.
